What to check before signing an internship agreement

Published 22 October 2026 · Independent editorial guide

Make the learning concrete

Record tasks, learning objectives, supervision, hours, location and dates. Ask how feedback and assessment work and who to contact if something goes wrong.

Clarify money and rights

Ask about pay or allowance, payment dates, expenses, leave and termination. The word internship alone does not determine legal status; local rules and the real arrangement matter.

Confirm responsibility

Identify who arranges accident and liability cover, whether your institution signs, and how illness or a changed placement is handled.

Keep a signed copy

Ask your institution and host to resolve unclear clauses before booking non-refundable travel. Keep emergency contacts and a signed copy accessible offline.

Information is a starting point. Confirm current requirements and funding with your institution and the competent authority.
