Residence, visas and insurance: your first checks

Published 22 October 2026 · Independent editorial guide

Start with citizenship and destination

Your requirements depend on nationality, current residence, destination, duration and placement type. Europe, the EU and the Schengen area are different groupings.

Check the right to intern

EU citizens generally have free-movement rights in other EU countries, subject to applicable conditions. Non-EU citizens should verify the destination’s internship and residence route. A Schengen visitor permission is not proof of a right to intern.

Check registration and healthcare

Ask the destination authority about local registration and your insurer about healthcare abroad. Where eligible, the EHIC concerns necessary state healthcare during a temporary stay; it does not replace comprehensive travel cover.

Confirm placement cover

Check accident, personal liability and professional liability arrangements with the institution and host. Ask explicitly whether your actual work activities are covered.

Information is a starting point. Confirm current requirements and funding with your institution and the competent authority.
